For certain subjects like History, Mathematics and Chemistry, forecasting questions is quite possible because some experienced teachers have the ability to analyse and examine past SPM questions and consequently make smart predictions. Their critical analysis allows them to forecast possible questions or at least topics that will be included in SPM 2019. However, what about the English Language 1119 subject? It is not topic or content based but as we know, it is all about language skills, grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, is producing forecast questions, in this case - Continuous Writing questions, a possibility?

Well, the answer to the question posed above is that, it is possible. As we know, any topic under the sun can be tested for Continuous Writing and that is the reason why predictions for Section B of 1119/1 can only be done in a general manner. Based on the critical scrutiny of the past questions for Continuous Writing, I have noticed certain patterns for each genre of the ques...

When it comes to writing responses to the novel question in SPM, there are a few issues among some SPM candidates. Normally, they are able to narrate the incidents or events in the novel fairly well. However, a common issue among some SPM candidates is their inability to justify or reason confidently.  For an instance, they are able to rewrite or narrate the challenges faced by the main character, nevertheless, fail to explain clearly how the main character faces his or her challenges. Similarly, they are able to describe a character who is courageous but they cannot explain with clarity the importance of being courageous.

No doubt, SPM examination is just around the corner but it does not mean it is too late to do anything. As teachers, we need to give our best to our learners and keep addressing their learning issues as best as we could. One of the preparations or revisions which can be done for the novel question is to ensure the SPM candidates are ready to justify their ideas or tho...

At this juncture, I believe Form 5 English Language teachers are still WORKING HARD to ensure their SPM 1119 candidates get the best result. Undoubtedly, there are numerous practices given by the Form 5 teachers for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. I believe one of the strategies that should be employed by Form 5 teachers is to focus on the mastery of past tense verbs. To me, implementing any FOCUSED strategies is an evidence of WORKING SMART. These are the reasons for focusing on the mastery of past tense verbs:

  1. Personally, I am positive many intermediate SPM 1119/1 candidates prefer to write a narrative, descriptive or narrative descriptive essay for Continuous Writing. Yet, most of them still have serious errors even if they construct sentences using very simple and common verbs. For examples, “She wakes up late this morning” and “Hasan played football for his school team and he runs fast.”

  2. Most of intermediate candidates have the ability to write Continuous Writing that is 100% co...

I believe SPM Trial Examination 2019 for English Language Paper is over in all schools. Most Form 5 teachers would have finished marking both 1119/1 and 1119/2. No doubt, these common things would be done by the Form 5 English Language teachers once marking is done:

  • Discussion of answers for both papers

  • Presentation of comments on common mistakes made by the candidates

  • Item analysis

  • Analysis of results and post-morterm

Is that all? What else to be done? I am sure some English Language teachers would call their learners and have a PERSONAL CONSULTATION with them. However, I am not sure how many teachers ensure personal consultation sessions involve each and every one of their learners. Personally, I believe having personal consultations after SPM Trial Examination (in fact, after every examination or test) is MANDATORY.

I would have several sessions for personal consultations either individually, in pairs or small groups (not more than 4 learners in a group). These ar...

If a mirror provides a reflection of our appearance, our learners' performance in 1119/2 in the SPM Trial Examination 2019 offers opportunities to engage in reflection of our own teaching. The ways certain questions in Paper 2 are answered, if we examine carefully, should promise a couple of significant revelations about our strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it is crucial for ESL/EFL teachers to be open-minded to engage in self-discovery especially our own flaws so that improvements can be achieved in future.

No doubt, I am still learning and exploring but based on my experiences teaching Form 5 for 26 years, these are some common issues when we examine our learners' answers in 1119/2.

CASE  1: SECTION A (TEXT AND GRAPHICS)

Issue: Average learners score roughly 6-8/15 marks. They have more errors in Rational Cloze.

REFLECTION:

Have I really tried to ENRICH THEIR VOCABULARY IN A  SYSTEMATIC  WAY? If yes, what system/approach/concept have I applied and how frequent? How many practices of R...

We do learn from our experience but definitely, we learn more from reflecting on our experience. The way ESL/EFL teachers reflect on the happenings around them does reveal who they are. One happening that concerns many ESL/EFL teachers at this point of time is the SPM Trial Examination 2019, of course, in particular the performance of the SPM 2019 candidates in 1119. By 22 August 2019, the English papers could be over in most schools and teachers could have started marking the examination scripts.

In about two weeks, complete results could be produced and analysis after analysis will be done. Depending on the teaching and learning contexts, the results for 1119 in the SPM Trial Examination could improve or drop. Analysing numbers and figures is one important issue but I believe there are other issues which should also be the concern of ESL/EFL teachers. In this write-up, I wish to share my thoughts especially with young and amateur English teachers who are given the responsibility to te...

Most of lower intermediate or weak learners are actually able writers, however, many of them commit multiple-word errors (MWEs) frequently. As ESL/EFL teachers we need to understand how MWEs happen and ways reduce them. Well, the reason is simple I guess. To me, the main reason for MWEs is the sentences they construct to express their ideas. Even though they are weak in English,  many lower intermediate learners perform fairly well in their mother tongue. It is due to this fact, when they think of sentences to be written for their English essays, their sentences could be something like these:

  1. Kakak saya menangis teresak-esak.

  2. Mereka terpedaya dengan tipu helah lelaki itu.

  3. Amin terkapai-kapai meminta pertolongan daripada orang sekelilingnya.

  4. Ahmad kaku di saat menerima berita kematian ayahnya.

  5. Fikiran Tihani melayang memikirkan tentang masalah yang perlu dihadapinya.

  6. Alias mematikan senyumannya ketika bersua muka dengan musuhnya.

  7. Pandangan matanya dihala...
